Situation

Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API), the parent company of Priceline, Soul Pattinson, and Pharmacist Advice, set up a new (32,506sqm) distribution centre in Marsden Park, Sydney. KNAPP Australia were engaged to design, build and install a large, automated racking and conveyor system.

The new facility housed extensive conveyor systems that required permanent access for operators to move around freely and conduct required maintenance. There was a lot of other infrastructure and structural steel surrounding the complex layout and design of the conveyor systems, and a conveyor system on the mezzanine also required an access solution for around the systems installed.

As there were multiple challenges to solve with one system, KOMBI was the perfect intralogistics choice.

Solution

KOMBI's lightweight, modular, and simple design allowed access up to, over and around the existing structures. The KOMBI Builda made the initial design a smooth and easy process, allowing the engineers to build their own access solutions in real time.

After the initial concept design, utilising the KOMBI Builda, and several meetings between SAYFA and KNAPP to finalise the design, it was decided to use KOMBI Elevated Walkways and Stairs and Conveyer Access Platforms to achieve their access needs.

They found the modular design of KOMBI was a lifesaver as there were a lot of changes required and last-minute adjustments. Plus being lightweight, it simplified the installation process dramatically. If using a steel system, it would’ve been very difficult and time-consuming to install.

Drawings produced at the conceptual stage by the KOMBI BUILDA greatly assisted with determining the correct system for the application.

What are the advantages of choosing Aluminium Vs Steel for your next system?

KOMBI Australian Made Stair and Platform Systems logo

KOMBI Systems are manufactured from lightweight aluminium which offers several advantages against steel. Steel has long been the traditional material selected throughout industry so why would you select aluminium? KOMBI® - The Intralogistics Choice

Distribution centres can be a complex weave of conveyors and other machinery that requires constant maintenance and overseeing. Ensuring that personnel are moving safely and effectively around these areas is often difficult and if not addressed can result in significant downtime and potential injury.

When providing intralogistic solutions for these types of facilities stairs, platforms and crossover systems are often an excellent choice but ensuring they fit in with existing systems can be labour intensive and problematic. When using traditional fully welded systems, if incorrect measurements are provided for manufacture and these differ from the actual site conditions, major issues in the install can be experienced.

The adjustable design of KOMBI Stair and Platform Systems ensures that should any modifications be required once they arrive to site, this can be easily done in situ and without the need for a total system redesign.
